STUDENT LIFE

Student life: the disadvantages of sharing a flat

Sharing

When you’re a student on a limited budget, living in a shared apartment can seem attractive. Everyone imagines a student flatshare being full of parties, friendship and laughter while being great for your budget. Sadly, the reality can sometimes be much less appealing! Find out about some of the disadvantages of living with a flatmate.

Sharing a flat with friends isn’t always the fabulous idea it might seem

Living with a complete stranger isn’t for everyone, so why not decide to live with your best friend? It sounds amazing, but sometimes it turns out to be a bad idea. Hanging out with your friends often is very different from living with them almost 24 hours a day. Arguments and disputes about things like shopping, cleaning or noise can quickly put an end to your friendship and in doing so put an end to the flatshare itself.

The problem of compatibility between housemates

A flatshare for 2, 3 or more people requires choosing future flatmates with care. If some people don’t get on it can quickly make the general atmosphere horrible for everyone. A simple lifestyle difference can make life difficult for all housemates, so if Frances is a night owl and her housemate Julie is an early bird, it can affect their relationship. These differences can lead to frustration and resentment towards the other personas they can’t enjoy living int he flat the way they want to.

The financial uncertainty of sharing

Living in a shared flat rather than a student residence means living in a bigger place and sharing the financial cost... provided your flatmate is reliable. Is there a solidarity clause in the lease? Do you have to pay for any rent your flatmate doesn’t pay? And what happens if one of the housemates leaves? Will your flatmate actually pay for his or her share of the shopping, shared expenses such as utilities or cleaning products, for example? All these uncertainties affect your budget, so living alone can be much more financially secure!

Where to live alone as a student?

Would you like to enjoy a friendly atmosphere in common areas and the freedom of a private space? Student residence life is for you! Socialise when you feel like it or enjoy the peace and quiet of your furnished room.

Nemea student residences offer many services like a gym, internet and the loan of a hoover when you need it. It’s a safer solution than sharing, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar city!
